Putting Jesus Back in the Old Testament

Syllabus

Course Overview:

Jacob, the Nephite prophet, declared: "We knew of Christ, and we had a hope of his glory many hundred years before his coming; and not only we ourselves had a hope of his glory, but also all the holy prophets which were before us. Behold, they believed in Christ and worshiped the Father in his name, and also we worship the Father in his name." (Jacob 4:5). Clearly, Jesus was far more present in the Old Testament than today. As Nephi was told, "There are many plain and precious things taken away from the book." (1 Ne. 13:28). Nephi also saw that modern scritpure "shall make known the plain and precious things which have been taken away." (1 Ne. 13:40). Using modern scritpure, we will put Jesus back in the Old Testament.

What to Expect:

Brother Dunford's style is mostly presentation. His goal is to cover a breadth and depth of the scriptures that you have not seen; such that you walk away from class each day saying, "I've never made that connection before!"

Participation by students is voluntary and appreciated, but not expected. You will never be called upon to speak, but if you raise your hand, your response will be welcomed and your insight valued.

This course is quite fluid. Brother Dunford will bring a suggested outline of topics to discuss, but that outline can and will be adjusted to meet the needs and desires of the class. Students are encouraged to suggest topics they would like discussed.

Ways to Participate:

There are three ways to participate in this class:

Credit:

This class is a non-traditional, shortened course designed to meet the current needs of young adults. It is not intended as a for-credit class. If you would like credit for the class, please do the following:

  1. Attend or listen to 12 of the 16 classes.
  2. Read something of your choice that will improve your understanding of and your appreciation of the symbols or covenants of the temple and how they lead us to Christ. It should require at least 360 minutes total (about 30 mintues per class). Please send me a very brief summary at the end of the class.
  3. Complete an Elevate Learning Project. This could include a study journal, a short written paper, a presenation to family or friends, or something similar. It would elevate what you learned in class.

Your learning is your responsibility. Therefore, all I need is a summary of what you did and for you to tell me that you completed all three requirements.

If you have any questions, please speak to me.
